Bruce was on edge as they approached the facility Steve was supposed to be in. Ross might have been crazy, but he wasn’t stupid. It was possible he wasn’t even here and they were on a wild goose chase. Still, it was all they had to go on. He was tense, knowing at any time he’d be unleashing the other guy and possibly facing the one man on the planet who hated him more than anyone else.
“Looks like this is the right place,” Tony said, noting the guards with guns and military vehicles parked behind a barbed wire fence. ”If not I’ll eat my helmet.”
They split up from there, the team and the SHIELD agents surrounding the fence. Bruce was left with Tony, who glanced at the doctor and nodded. In seconds, the doctor was gone and The Hulk was there in his place, obviously pissed as he let out a roar and smashed easily through the fence.
Steve was woken briefly as he heard Hulk’s familiar roar and felt the explosions. he glanced at the men guarding him, though he could barely see with how beaten he was. “You’re dead before you get out the door,” he whispered before passing out again. He was still naked and being held in the freezing room. The men guarding him had on protective clothing and guns. The moment Steve passed out again, they quickly took off…
With The Hulk leading the charge, the team made quick work of the men holding Steve captive. They were working for Ross, but of course, the general was no where to be found. Simply a puppet master pulling the strings from a safe distance. Steve was found, barely alive and so cold. The Hulk wouldn’t let anyone else near him, cradling the limp body of the captain in his arms protectively. Once they were clear of the building and SHIELD had arrived, it took a lot of coaxing to get the growling, angry beast to hand him off to the medics. Tony promised to stay with Steve, which finally convinced Hulk to let him go.
Even as they were speeding away, Hulk was shrinking in on himself, returning to Bruce. When the doctor was back, Clint was there with a blanket to wrap around the confused man’s shoulders. He looked at the archer, worry clearly written on his face.
“We got him, doc. Let’s get you out of here.”
“Whatever, is that what we’re calling it now,” Bruce chuckled as he walked with Pepper to her car. “I’m always up for whatever with you, and the rest of that…dinner, the park, sounds good to me.” Sitting in the passenger seat, he buckled his seat belt and pulled his cell phone from inside his jacket. Opening up a search, he glanced at Pepper as she started up the car. “What sounds good? I’ll make a reservation now.”
“Hmm, tell you what, you choose tonight. I chose last time” She smiled and pulled out of the garage heading into the city. Having faith in him that he’d be alright, knowing that he did get anxious in crowds. But he had been doing so well, even after that day just a few days prior. At a redlight she looked over and smiled at him, reaching over and taking his hand in hers on his knee.
He smiled at her, scrolling through the list of some of his favorite restaurants he kept in his contacts. Small places that didn’t attract large, noisy crowds. Selecting an Indian restaurant not too far from the tower, he called and made a quick reservation for eight o’clock. While he had the phone pressed to his ear, he looked at Pepper, returning the smile and squeezing her hand. He could brave a night out for her. For Pepper, he could do a lot of things.
“Because they’re assholes?” he replied. “Look, you deserve the truth, alright? So here it is.” He hooked his foot around the rolling desk chair and sent it Bruce’s way, seating himself on the edge of the work table. “Back when they first started planning on the Avengers Initiative, Fury had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it approved. The idiot board of directors had a condition—they wanted Emil Blonsky added to the team.”Fury was gonna kill him if he found out he’d told Bruce all of this. One look at Bruce’s face, however, and Tony knew he’d take Fury’s wrath a thousand times over to make that look of hurt go away.
“Fury didn’t see that as an option. So they sent someone in to make sure it wouldn’t be.” He pointed to himself. “Me.” He smiled slightly. “You know how good I am at pissing people off, it didn’t take much for me to get Ross to turn us down.” Standing, he moved to kneel in front of Bruce, hands on his thighs as he looked up at his husband.
“This suit, Bruce. It’s a way for me to keep you free and not locked in a cage like Blonsky will be for the rest of his life.” He reached up, pressing a hand to Bruce’s cheek. “M’not gonna let anyone take you away from me. Not now, not ever.” He leaned forward, eyes closing and his forehead resting against Bruce’s abs. “I can’t live without you, Bruce. And I’m gonna do everything in my power to make sure I don’t have to.”
Grudgingly, Bruce sat on the chair rolled his way, both arms crossed tightly over his chest. He couldn’t bring himself to look at Tony, though he knew he was acting childish. This wasn’t at all what he’d expected. Sitting with his jaw clenched tightly, he listened, and at the mention of Blonsky, his head snapped back around.
“Are you…are you serious? They were going to put Blonsky on the team? Jesus!” Running a hand over his face, Bruce laughed bitterly. “They were so worried about having me around, and yet they wanted to have that psycho as a part of the initiative. Remind me again why I even associate myself with SHIELD?”
At least it wasn’t Fury’s idea, which was a small comfort. The shady bunch of characters pulling the director’s strings were the ones that had ordered the nuclear strike on Manhattan, he’d found out later. These were supposed to be the good guys. Frankly, he was done trusting anyone. Anyone except for Tony. He finally managed to meet his husband’s eyes, and he swallowed, fingers combing through his hair when Tony leaned into him.
“I don’t want to live without you, Tony,” Bruce said quietly. “But the fact of the matter is, they want to lock me up. This suit of yours…it’s just a temporary solution to a bigger problem. I don’t think they’re going to be satisfied until I’m shut up in a padded room for the rest of my life…however long that is.” He sighed, not sure what to do now. “The council…they’ve proven they’re willing to go over Fury’s head and do whatever they want. What if they try to go through you to get to me?”
“Stretchy clothes, huh?” Bruce chuckled, eyebrows arching upward. “That could be a good idea. An expensive idea, but at least I wouldn’t have to go shopping all of the time.” Slipping his hand behind her back, they started toward the door, which he held open for her. “You do know if I end up getting a suit that I’m going to have to take you out to dinner.” Stopping at the elevator, he pushed the button and waited for the doors to part. “So maybe you should get a little something for yourself as well.”
She smiled and felt a flutter in her stomach. “Hmm, I’d like that” She smiled and gave him a peck on his cheek, then around to his lips just as the elevator stopped on the floor in the garage. “Maybe we should make it a special night, have dinner, go for a walk in the park or something, then come back and…do whatever” She said with a light purr on her voice and she shot him a wink before walking him to her car. “If you want” She added cheekily and unlocked the doors.
Bruce snorted, still pacing and rubbing Rebecca’s back gently. “You would be.” Strolling over to the windows, he turned his body so the baby was facing out over Manhattan, and he kissed her soft head as he watched the city thoughtfully. “You still want to move to California?” Bruce asked, turning his head to look at Tony. “Or do you think we should stay here?”
“No, I want to move” Tony told Bruce, turning on the sofa slightly to look over the back of it at his fiance and their daughter “It’s nicer out there for her to grow up, there’s more space, a proper garden, the beach…” he trailed off and smiled “It’s just nicer than growing up in the middle of the city”
“I think you’re right,” he nodded, giving the city one last look before walking over to the couch. Rebecca had stopped wiggling and felt heavier against his chest, which told him she’d fallen asleep. Continuing to bounce a little, Bruce tipped his head down the hall. “I’m going to take her to the bedroom, lay her down in the bassinet. You want to come?”
